Tribute

Laura Lee Kately Alexander was born April 14th, 1947, in St. Martinville, Louisiana to the late Mazel Filer Kately and Raymond Kately.  She had 5 siblings, Cassidy Kately, Linda (Kately) Maull, the late Mary Lee (Kately) LaRue, the late Iris (Kately) Roberston, and the late Benedict Kately.  She graduated from Adam Carlson High School in 1965, she attended Evangeline Area Tri-Parish Vocational School where she received a Certification in Secretarial Training in 1966.   For over 25 years she worked as a Secretary for St. Martin Parish Police Jury/St. Martin Parish Health Department collectively.  She retired and later worked part-time at the St. Martin Parish Heritage Museum for over 10 years where she made many new friends but, one dear friend, Anna Richard with whom she enjoyed frequent conversations and exchanging gourmet dishes.

She moved to Texas and gave birth to her only daughter, Tarsha Alexander Bell, in 1972. She returned to St. Martinville, La. and became a faithful member of Notre Dame Catholic Church.

Laura recently joined her daughter, Tarsha and grandchildren Keena Chretien, Courtney Bell, and Kirstynn Bell in Baytown, Texas in September 2022.  It was not her intention to stay in Texas.  She was there to visit.  But, after spending some time there, she decided to make herself comfortable and stay.  Her daughter and grandchildren now understand God’s plan and why she decided to remain and spend this past year with them. They are very grateful and thankful that she decided to stay.  Only she and God knew her destiny and timing, but for her daughter, it was an answered prayed.

She was preceded in death by her sisters Mary Lee LaRue and Iris Robertson, her brother Benedict Kately, her granddaughter Katelynn Victoria Bell, her cousin and best friend Hilda Kately, her “good cousin” Merline “Chickie” Fontenette, and her parents Raymond Kately and Mazel Filer Kately.

Laura, who was also known by many as “Sue-dee”, was a dear sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, Godmother, friend, neighbor, and most importantly a believer and faithful servant of the Lord.  She was called home on the evening of September 9th, 2023.  She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, 3 grandchildren, one brother, one sister, nieces, nephews, godchildren, cousins, close friends, neighbors, and other relatives who loved her dearly.

Laura’s memories will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.  May she rest in peace.  She will be laid to rest at Sterling White Cemetery.
